New Ys Game in Development

Spencer of SiliconErahad the opportunity to speak to Toshihiro Kondo, the president of Falcom, recently and asked about their next Ys project.

Kondo had this to say on the matter:

“We’ve already decided on the hardware for the next Ys game, and development has already begun,” Kondo answered. “I can’t give out any details just yet, however, but I do think people will be surprised when they learn what it is.”

Though, I know there’s been grumbling of late due to the frequent Kiseki releases- though in reality, it’s just two Kiseki games back to back, one because of the 30th anniversary. But as a quick reminder, Falcom has not forgotten their other games.

The Ys VII (yes, note the numbering format) project has been the horizon for quite some time now. On 3/19/2009, Falcom posted the press release for Ys Seven. (PDF)

The backlash to this was significant, as it was their first announced PSP Exclusive. I imagine Falcom managed to keep the next piece under their sleeve for quite some time, but the backlash forced Falcom to move their hand early on it.

On 4/1/2009 (Yes, I know it’s April Fool’s. Though Falcom has not said anything about it being a joke and you don’t make a press release for an April Fool’s joke, anyway!), Falcom put out the press release for the Ys VII Multiplatform Project. (PDF)

My guess is, this is the next game. (uhoh, now we’re going into opinions???)

Now, I’ve also read Kondo saying on the record that this is going to be a relatively different game than what we experienced with Ys Seven. I’ve also noticed a clear distinction between the numbering style on the two games. Anytime the multiplatform project has been referenced, it has been with ‘Ys VII’.

So a surprise that Kondo has mentioned will probably be a wildly different remake (already?- maybe I should say variation) of Ys Seven.
