[Translation Tuesday] Trails in the Sky the 3rd – Star Door #14

trans-tues

The video in this week’s Translation Tuesday assumes you have finished SC. Please do not watch if you wish to avoid spoilers for Trails in the Sky Second Chapter. (No, seriously. It shows part of SC’s ending in it!)

This week’s Translation Tuesday is the final door you can unlock in Sora no Kiseki the 3rd, due to its unlock requirement. If you wish to know a little more about the Ouroboros post-Second Chapter, this is your door. Not only do you see the Anguis speaking together, but you do meet all of them, albeit in a ‘voice only’ capacity.

This week is also the first bit of multimedia put together in coordination with Raindrops, who runs the Legend of Heroes Kiseki Translations blog. Many of you have seen and referenced her translations before. As such, I’ve reached out to her to ‘pool our efforts’ so to speak and allow you to see her work brought in line with a video of the scene itself.

This video was littered with technical issues, and has changed how future videos will be done for this. Many thanks to Wyrdwad, XSEED’s own Tom Lipschultz, for the help in getting passed the crazy technical difficulties in getting this video out.

Translation: Raindrops
Editing: omgfloofy / Gu4n

Proofing: Yotaka, Firehawke, Asmaria
Special Thanks go to Mr. Wyrdwad himself.

  1. Wow, that is fantastic. Thank you so much for translating! ;)

As for the fourth wall comment, it could be that, or whatever recording device in universe allowed the player to see that take place…

    1. I thought of that too. If Campanella wasn’t just breaking the fourth wall then it’s the more likely explanation.

  2. Dang, this is insane! All it’s done now it made me wrack my brain trying to figure out if anybody I’ve met in Cold Steel so far might be one of these Anguis. So much excitement! So many questions! Will anybody take Weissmann’s place as the Third Anguis? (I was half-expecting Campanella to get a promotion, but I’m kinda glad he didn’t – I like him as a sort of “above the system” kind of antagonist) What is the Orpheus Final Plan? (my familiarity with the myth of Orpheus leads me to believe it has something to do with raising the dead) I must know! (by playing the games – I’m basically thinking out loud with this, not asking for spoilers :P )

By the way, just out of curiosity, what were the technical issues that Tom helped you out with? My first guess is that it was probably the names on the text boxes, since those looked to have been inserted into the game itself rather than overlaid on the video.

    1. Don’t worry. I’m not answering those questions at all. ;D Though there have been some wild crack theories on them. And Kondo seems to have taken a shine to teasing fans with tidbits of information on some of them in interviews.

I was using a combination of Aegisub (to make the subtitles) and Virtualdub (to encode them into the video). Unfortunately, though, virtualdub didn’t like THIS file and would desync it from the audio when I’d load it into the program. As a result, by the end of the video, the audio (and subtitles if I tried to run them through it anyway) were desynced by about 3-4 seconds. It wasn’t a ‘ugh. I’ll just let it go’ sort of thing, because it was very noticable by the end.

Tom helped me find a really good file converter and taught me some additional tricks in Virtualdub to help with the encoding process. By the time I was done with it, I was working on a raw, uncompressed .avi file of the video, which also ended up eating almost 60gb of space. xD –but it also worked (nearly) seamlessly into Virtualdub. I just had to do a raw encode of it to retime the subtitles, because it, for some reason, all the frames shifted up 32 because it stuck 32 frames from the end at the start.

And thanks for the comment on the names- those were actually two subtitles from Aegisub. One of text matching the background, which was the same color as the background bar in the video, and the name placed on top of it. I wanted that to be usable so badly. I’m so glad it worked out. lol

      1. Wow, much more technical than I was thinking – I always seem to be surprised by how complicated a lot of seemingly-simple computer-related tasks actually are to pull off. Kudos and thanks to you and Tom for all the hard work!

(Also wanted to mention the names again – those were overlays? They looked absolutely seamless – impressive work!)
